Hypnosis is a natural state of increased focused attention, concentration, and deep relaxation, also called "trance state". Trance states occur naturally every day in most people and are comparable to the relaxed state we reach when we are meditating or doing yoga.
Hypnosis is being used for relaxation, for the therapy of specific psychological or physical disorders as well as to improve performance (in sports, studying, exams and professional life). If a therapist (e.g. psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, physician, psychiatrist, or hypnotherapist) uses hypnosis to treat medical or psychological conditions, we speak of clinical or medical hypnosis. Common disorders treated with hypnotherapy are behavioral problems (e.g. smoking, overeating, stress, bed wetting, and nail biting), anxiety disorders, psychosomatic disorders (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, asthma, allergies, teeth grinding), sleeping problems, and physical conditions (e.g. chronic pain, preparation for medical and surgical interventions, and obstetric care).
